Campaign Details
How did the Lawyers' Campaign for CollegeBound Foundation begin?
In 1992, a small group of volunteers from various law firms decided to help raise money toward the Last Dollar Grants that CollegeBound provides to its scholars. They created the Annual Lawyers' Campaign for CollegeBound Foundation and set the crucial foundation for the Campaign as it stands today.
What is the mission of the CollegeBound Foundation?
The mission of the CollegeBound Foundation is to encourage and enable Baltimore City public school students to attend college. In 1988, a group of business and community leaders decided to create a pre-college program in response to the failure of the public school system to get students into college.
These leaders recognized that there were many students being "harbored" in neighborhood high schools. They came to school regularly, played by the rules, and demonstrated substantial academic potential. These students, however, were overlooked due to school officials giving more attention to those young adults who did not play by the rules. As a result, CollegeBound came into existence as an independent, non-profit program designed to work exclusively with city students to help them achieve a post-secondary education. The broader goal was to prepare them to be members of Baltimore's workforce and to contribute to the strengthening of the social and economic fabric of our City.
How long does the Campaign run?
The Campaign begins in early September and ends on December 31.
How does the Campaign generate funds toward CollegeBound’s mission?
The Campaign generates funds from three sources. First, law firms in Baltimore and the surrounding area sponsor the Annual Lawyers’ Campaign for CollegeBound. Second, individual attorneys, paralegals, legal secretaries, and other support staff donate personally to the Campaign. Both of these efforts are sustained through the dedication of our volunteers, called Deans. Deans help generate support and excitement for the Campaign through their efforts at their individual law firms. They actively solicit donations through their network of friends, colleagues, and coworkers, and help us to work within their firm for sponsorship.
Finally, we host an annual event for summer associates each July. Have a Seat at the Bar! is a fun happy hour designed to both raise funds and awareness among soon-to-be lawyers, young lawyers, and their mentors.
